I'm very happy that this will be my first post on the board. Be prepared, as I'm sure it will be rather long winded.
Gay marriage, in my opinion, should not even be a debate.
There is no reason that anyone should tell anyone else that they cannot marry another consenting adult. I will attempt to express my opinion on every 'issue' involved and I welcome fire spirited debaters with a sharp tongue to challenge.
Religion and the bible:
Let us not forget that this very country was founded on the separation of church and state. Meaning your bible cannot bash me, nor the way I choose to live my life. Not everyone follows the same religion. This makes the religion card the weakest of the attacks thrown in the face of gay marriage. Also I am sure your priest does not banish you from a church because you eat oysters, or your shirt is a poly-cotton mix. These 'rules' are located right along with the gay marriage verse. Perhaps it is a sign from your lord of how ridiculous it is that an all forgiving God and savior would turn his children away from him due to something as trivial as homosexuality. Not to mention, the bible is recorded as written by man, man is corrupt. What revision is the bible at now a days anyway?
The Tradition of Marriage:
I have heard this one numerous times. However, I doubt that we still marry our children off for cows or land. Marriage is a constant change, a plan that has had to be re-written time and time again. There is no tradition of marriage, it is not a symbol meant for only a man and a women, just as it is not a symbol for only two wealthy individuals, or two individuals as long as they are the same race. I hope that in the end, the right choice will be made as it was in the case of inter-racial marriages.
Marrying Dogs, Trees, and Children:
I agree that those who think that legalization of homosexual marriage will lead to marriage of trees, animals, and children are just grasping for something to throw in the faces of whom they oppose. There is no reason to push barriers of marriage that harm an individual. Children are not of age, an age barrier is to protect their innocence. Animals can not only not consent, but are also unable to speak of abuse or mistreatment, thus that barrier protects animals rights. Inanimate objects cannot consent, and while I hardly think a tree will be muffed if snuggled all night by a particular person there is no basis of union between two objects that cannot communicate or share feelings. That barrier is protection...I don't know which would be worse. For the tree or the human. What does the barrier of allowing homosexual couples protect them from? If they are consenting adults who love and cherish each other then they have every right to marry, just as the heterosexual couples do. I Imagen that we were met with a similar resistance when they began to allow interracial marriages so long ago. Back then, it was clear to them that after the dust settled, they came to the conclusion that there was no reason they could ban marriage between a black man and a white woman or vice versa. This debate on gay marriage is exactly the same. Of course those fighting for gay marriage know there is a long tread ahead of us (I mean people are still judgmental to interracial couples, even today.) Though it's comforting to know that we are fighting for a right well worth the fight.
The Effects Gay Marriage on Children:
I will admit that having two Mothers or two Fathers would make a child not fit into the world's perfect vision of a family. Of course I also think that having abusive parents, parents who fight all the time, drug addicts, prostitutes, ect will put a child in more danger then having homosexual parents. Children need loving parents and family, that is it. Children need a stable home where they are nurtured and cherished. Children will grow into good people so long as they are loved and cared for...weather it be by two men or two women.
The Natural Law:
This was the first time I have seen this one, here on this board! Yes, most men are attracted to women, most women to men. This law that you speak of is just nature's way of having human procreate. Nothing more...to judge a person that you're to spend the rest of your life with based on what's in their pants is ignorant. Not every woman is a baby making unit, not all men are not business like football players. Get. Over. It. There is no other reason that a man and a woman would be attracted to each other, and until I see a dire need for the population to be increased, and the orphanages are empty I don't care about nature's 'Natural Law.' People are people. People deserve happiness and societies stereotypes should never have so much power over the government as to deny two grown people their happiness.
Calling it Something Else:
Why? There is no need for this. People have told me that gays will abuse marriage and seek benefits, and you're going to tell me that heterosexual couples don't do this? You say 'I don't want to pay for their unemployment' well I don't want to pay for yours. Don't like it? Get a better system. Marriage is marriage, it is not some pure holy tradition for everyone. It is a piece of paper after a blood test stating that if a person passes that the other person has a right to benefits, or that the couple can share health benefits, or see their loved one in a hospital. This does not hurt you, this is actually none of your business.
Okay, my fingers are going to fall off.
There's my two cents for the collection jar.
Best Regards,
TheTinGirl
P.s. The sooner people realize that while certain situations may make them uncomfortable, they do not run their neighbors lives, the better we will become as a country.
