Bishop bars Patrick Kennedy from Communion over abortion
Washington (CNN) -- Rhode Island's top Roman Catholic leader has asked Rep. Patrick Kennedy to stop taking Communion over his support for abortion rights, the diocese said Sunday.
In a statement issued Sunday, Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin said he told Kennedy in February 2007 that it would be "inappropriate" for him to continue receiving the fundamental Catholic sacrament, "and I now ask respectfully that you refrain from doing so." Read more here .... I really think that that is way too much pressure on a politician from a church, and that isn't right at all. Personally, I think churches should stay out of politics and just tend to their business of saving souls and looking after the spiritual side of their members. What's next? The Christian Scientists throwing a Senator out for being for the health care bill? The Mormon church barring a Congressman from the sacraments for not wearing that funny underwear twice? This is getting ridiculous. Purrs, Pookie

Kennedy knew his actions would not be approved of by the church and he made the choice to take those actions anyway. The politician, not the church, is the problem here. |
